Early Life
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was born Saul Alvarez on July 18, 1990 in Juan Jose Rios, Jalisco, Mexico. Saul is the son of Tomás Álvarez and Irma Alvarez. Saul has one brother (Tommy) and three sisters (Saula/Sarahi/Trujillo). Saul started boxing at the age of 13 after watching his brother compete in a boxing match. Saul trained under the tutelage of coach Chepo Reynoso from Saul’s adolescence to early adulthood.
Alvarez made his professional debut at the age of 15 on September 26, 2005 with a first round knockout victory over Manuel Rosales. Saul was given the nickname “Canelo” Álvarez after Canelo Aldo, a former world champion Mexican boxer. Saul has been known for his aggressive style in the ring and is seen as one of the more exciting fighters to watch.

Canelo knocked out eleven of his 13 recorded opponents in his first 19 months as a professional, all of whom were significantly older. However, in 2013, Reynoso’s father said that Alvarez had fought ten additional times during that time and won each by knockout (KO), but that because these bouts (all held in small venues in Nayarit) were so poorly documented, it was not worth the effort to correct the record.
On 20 January 2006, Álvarez’ third official fight of his career was a win over future IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vázquez in Guadalajara, Jalisco. On 28 June 2008, Canelo fought Vázquez again. He also made boxing history that night when he and all six of his brothers faced off on the same card, with Canelo being the youngest.
On March 5, 2011, Alvarez captured the vacant WBC light middleweight title via unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton. The bout was aired on HBO. Alvarez successfully defended his newly acquired WBC title against Ryan Rhodes, the #4 rated Ring light middleweight and current European light middleweight champion. On June 18, 2011, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Álvarez knocked out Rhodes in the twelfth round.
On September 14, 2013, Álvarez challenged Mayweather in a 12-round bout for the WBA (Regular), WBC, and Ring magazine welterweight titles. Floyd Mayweather Jr., Ring magazine’s #1 pound-for-pound fighter and the unified WBA (Regular) and WBC champion, faced off against Alvarez in a 12-round match for the vacant WBA (Super), WBC, and Ring magazine belts on September 14. The live crowd of 16,746 at the MGM Garden witnessed Mayweather’s win over Alvarez via majority decision.
Despite losing the Mayweather bout, Saul took home $5 million in earnings, plus a percentage of PPV sales, for a total of $12 million.
