Early Life

Khaled was born on November 26, 1975, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Palestinian parents who had immigrated to the United States. They were also musicians, which naturally attracted Khaled to music also. He started developing an interest in rap and soul music at a young age and his parents supported his interest.

When he was 16, his parents ran into financial trouble and lost everything. They moved back to New Orleans to live with family, but Khaled stayed in Florida to try to launch his music career.

He started working in a local Merry-Go-Round record store while growing up, networking with rising rap artists like Birdman and Lil Wayne and, to the dismay of his boss, running up the phone bill by placing long-distance calls to record labels.

He DJed at clubs and earned a meager $100 a week, barely enough to get by.

“I was just a kid and I got evicted probably 10 times,” he writes in his 2016 book, “The Keys.” “My friends would come over and I would have no furniture. Nothing in my fridge. Just records.”

On an episode of Belaire’s “Self Made Tastes Better” video series, he said, “I used to stay in hotels because I couldn’t afford a place.” “Some nights, I had to sleep in the car,” he continued.

Career

With his increasing popularity and number of connections, as well as being the DJ for Terror Squad, Khaled released his first formal mixtape, which led to a long string of commercially successful real LPs.

The debut full-length Listennn: The Album (2006), released through Koch, was a moderate success thanks to the Afrika Bambaataa sampling on Cool & Dre production “Holla at Me.” It reached Billboard’s rap chart and, like all Khaled songs that followed, included several artists.

After the release of three albums on Koch/E1, he joined up with Def Jam. “We Takin’ Over,” “I’m So Hood,” “Out Here Grindin’,” and “All I Do Is Win” were among his four pop Top 40 singles. These anthems featuring numerous rappers and producers earned Khaled several gold and platinum plaques, thanks to the strength of their parent albums.

Moving on through the 2010s, Khaled became one of hip hop’s most reliable hitmakers, appearing on records by Rick Ross (“I’m On One”), Lil Wayne (“Take It to the Head”), Drake (“No New Friends”) and YG (“My Nigga”). His 2012 album, Kiss the Ring, gained a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. He also appeared as a musical guest on the first night of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards to perform “Hold You Down” from his 2015 record I Changed A Lot.

The 2016 follow-up Major Key featured Chris Brown, Travi$ Scott and Big Sean among others. While Khaled had no production credits on his 2017 album Grateful, he was still able to land several songs on the Billboard 200 thanks to guests like Drake, Beyoncé and Rihanna. Later that year, DJ Khaled expanded into film with his cameo in the TV movie Geostorm. He also appeared briefly in the 2018 boxing drama Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone.
