Early Life

The eldest son of a Jamaican mother and Panamanian father, Greg Jackson, Bashar Barakah Jackson was born on July 20, 1999, in Brooklyn, New York City. Pop’s father is of Panamanian descent, while his mother is Jamaican. The rapper grew up in the residential neighborhood of Canarsie. He has an older brother named Obasi.

Growing up in Canarsie, Brooklyn, Jackson attended nine different schools and as a child, he enjoyed playing the African drums at his local church. Jackson was expelled from eighth grade for bringing a gun to school and spent two years on house arrest after being charged with possessing a weapon.

Pop was renting a house in Los Angeles on February 19, 2020. Two masked men broke into the house in the middle of the night, and one of them had a handgun.

A call was received from the east coast alerting the LAPD of the home invasion, and they arrived at the scene six minutes later. Police found Pop Smoke with several gunshot wounds.

As a result, the rapper was rushed to the hospital and doctors performed a thoracotomy, a surgical procedure to gain access to the pleural space of the chest, on his left side. A few hours later, he was pronounced dead at the age of 20.
