Early Life

James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942, and grew up in Liverpool, England. His father, James (“Jim”) McCartney, was a volunteer firefighter during World War II and was absent from the birth of his son. Peter Michael McCartney is McCartney’s younger brother and Ruth is his stepsister from his father’s second marriage.

McCartney’s mother, Mary, was a midwife and the family’s primary wage earner; her earnings enabled them to move into 20 Forthlin Road in Allerton, where they lived until 1964. She rode a bicycle to her patients; McCartney described an early memory of her leaving at “about three in the morning [the] streets … thick with snow”.

When McCartney was 14, his mother, Mary, died of a brain embolism. His father (also known as “Jim”) was a trumpeter and pianist. The family had an upright piano, which encouraged Paul to practice frequently. McCartney composed his first song “I Lost My Little Girl” on a Zenith acoustic guitar when he was just 14.

McCartney attended Stockton Wood Road Primary School in Speke from 1947 until 1949, when he transferred to Joseph Williams Junior School in Belle Vale because of congestion at Stockton. In 1953, he was one of only three pupils out of 90 who passed the 11-Plus exam, allowing him to attend the Liverpool Institute rather than a secondary modern school.

In 1954, he met George Harrison, a schoolmate from Speke, on the bus. The two became fast friends; McCartney later acknowledged: “I tended to talk down to him since he was a year younger.”

Career

At the age of fifteen, he met John Lennon and the Quarrymen, and he swiftly joined the band as a rhythm guitarist. The names were changed to The Beatles in 1960. McCartney, Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr made up the lineup. By early 1964, the Beatles were exploding “Beatlemania” all around the world, taking over both the American and British pop charts and breaking sales records. McCartney and Lennon collaborated on many of their early songs, including “Love Me Do.”

The Beatles are the most successful music act of all time, having sold over 183 million records in the United States and 600 million copies worldwide. They have several records for most number-one albums on the UK Albums Chart, most number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and most singles sold in the United States.

In 1988, The Beatles were enshrined into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and all four main members were recognized individually between 1994 and 2015. Between 1964 and 1970, the Beatles made five major motion pictures.

McCartney released twelve studio records from 1960 to 1970, including “Yesterday,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” some of the most famous songs in pop history. In 1965, Queen Elizabeth II named McCartney and the other Beatles Companions of the Order of the British Empire.

At the conclusion of their 1966 tour, the Beatles played their last commercial gig. “Abbey Road” was the band’s final recorded studio album. The Beatles subsequently fell out over business squabbles. On April 10, 1970, McCartney announced his departure from the group during a press conference in Los Angeles (he had previously stated it on television).

McCartney’s Solo Career and Wings: After the Beatles broke up in 1970, McCartney debuted as a solo artist with “McCartney,” which became a number-one seller in the United States. McCartney was one of the founding members of legendary British rock group Wings from 1971 to 1981.

He has released twenty-two studio pop albums and five classical albums since the breakup of the Beatles.

Paul McCartney Quotes

I think people who create and write, it actually does flow-just flows from into their head, into their hand, and they write it down. It's simple.

When you first get money, you buy all these things so no one thinks you're mean, and you spread it around. You get a chauffeur and you find yourself thrown around the back of this car and you think, I was happier when I had my own little car! I could drive myself!
