Early Life
On June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York City, Michael Gerard Tyson was born. He has an older brother named Rodney (born c. 1961) and an older sister named Denise who perished of a heart attack at the age of 24 in February 1990.
On his birth certificate, Tyson’s biological father is identified as “Purcell Tyson” (who was from Jamaica), but Jimmy Kirkpatrick was the man Tyson had known as his father.
When Tyson was ten, his mother and him had to move due to financial difficulties. By the age of thirteen, he had been arrested for 38 misdemeanors, often engaging in battles with bigger youths who made fun of his voice (Tyson has a lisp).

On March 6, 1985, Tyson made his professional debut in Albany, New York. He knocked out Hector Mercedes with a first-round stoppage. In the first year of his professional career, he had 15 fights. Tyson won 26 of his first 28 bouts by knockout or technical decision; 16 were in the opening round.
On February 16, 1986, at Houston Field House in Troy, New York, Tyson made his debut on national television against journeyman heavyweight Jesse Ferguson. In the fifth round, with his nose broken by an uppercut from Tyson, Ferguson was knocked down.
He rose, only to be knocked down again by Mike with a right hand. The fight was stopped and Mike Tyson had his first knockout victory. Mike Tyson said: “I hit him (Ferguson) with punches that I didn’t even know I threw.”

On February 7, 1988, he married actress Robin Givens for 17 days. Givens was best known at the time for her role on the comedy series Head of the Class. Tyson’s union with Givens was quite stormy; allegations of violence, marital abuse, and mental disease were leveled against him.
