On June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York City, Michael Gerard Tyson was born. He has an older brother named Rodney (born c. 1961) and an older sister named Denise who perished of a heart attack at the age of 24 in February 1990.
On his birth certificate, Tyson’s biological father is identified as “Purcell Tyson” (who was from Jamaica), but Jimmy Kirkpatrick was the man Tyson had known as his father.
When Tyson was ten, his mother and him had to move due to financial difficulties. By the age of thirteen, he had been arrested for 38 misdemeanors, often engaging in battles with bigger youths who made fun of his voice (Tyson has a lisp).
Tyson’s mother died six years later, leaving the 16-year-old Tyson in the care of boxing manager and trainer Cus D’Amato, who became his legal guardian. “I never saw my mother happy with me or proud of me for doing anything,” he later said. I never got a chance to talk to her or learn about her. Professionally, it has no effect, but it’s crushing emotionally and personally.”
Tyson had three amateur bouts as an under-age collegian. Mike Tyson was 17 years old when he won his first national title, the Junior Olympic Games in 1983. Tyson dropped out of high school as a junior.
On March 6, 1985, Tyson made his professional debut in Albany, New York. He knocked out Hector Mercedes with a first-round stoppage. In the first year of his professional career, he had 15 fights. Tyson won 26 of his first 28 bouts by knockout or technical decision; 16 were in the opening round.
On February 16, 1986, at Houston Field House in Troy, New York, Tyson made his debut on national television against journeyman heavyweight Jesse Ferguson. In the fifth round, with his nose broken by an uppercut from Tyson, Ferguson was knocked down.
He rose, only to be knocked down again by Mike with a right hand. The fight was stopped and Mike Tyson had his first knockout victory. Mike Tyson said: “I hit him (Ferguson) with punches that I didn’t even know I threw.”
Mike’s performance inspired the later line from Jimmy Jacobs: “Here comes Mike Tyson! He’s the next Mike Tyson! Forget Sonny Liston, forget Muhammad Ali! There is a new athlete in town. Mike Tyson!” With almost no amateur experience, Mike had turned professional with a perfect style, a southpaw stance and a powerful punch to his opponents’ heads.
After being inactive for several years, Tyson was able to reclaim two of his titles with a successful comeback. However, he then lost his WBA title when Holyfield returned from retirement to knockout him in round 11. When the rematch rolled around in 1997, it did not go as planned for Tyson when he controversially bit Holyfield twice and was disqualified
In 1999, Tyson made a brief return to professional boxing in order to defeat Francois Botha – only to go back to jail for nine months after being accused of attacking two motorists. When he got out of prison again, he destroyed a number of boxers in rapid succession, either in the first or second round.
Tyson’s last professional triumph was in 2003, when he outpointed Clifford Etienne in 49 seconds. After a number of failed comeback attempts, injuries, and losses, Mike Tyson retired in 2005.
Tyson was the first and only heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold all four major titles, as well as being the only one to ever accomplish it. He is still regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time today.

When their relationship began to deteriorate, Givens and Tyson had an altercation at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. The two reportedly argued about financial issues. According to Givens, things came to a head after she and Tyson gave a joint interview with Barbara Walters on ABC’s 20/20 in September 1988.
Following his divorce from the first Mrs. Tyson, he married Monica Turner on April 19, 1997, until January 14, 2003. Allen Iverson's Net Worth
At the height of his career, Mike Tyson had it all. He was not only the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, a well-known and dangerous household name, but he was also a multi-millionaire. When you add up all of his earnings from boxing matches, Tyson earned almost $700 million.
However, that wasn’t his actual net worth since Tyson utilized the revenue to pay for things like taxes, training, and living expenses. Even though those costs are taken into account, Tyson still had a peak estimated net worth of almost $300 million.
Despite his enormous net worth, however, Tyson fell into the same trap that many athletes and Americans do: his expenditures were too high. His costs were exorbitant, but his earnings weren’t sufficient to cover them. And before long, Tyson’s fortune was virtually gone. Today, Mike Tyson’s net worth is just $3 million.
