As a child, Durant and his siblings grew up in Prince George’s County on the eastern outskirts of Washington DC. He was unusually tall from an early age and reached 6 ft 0 in while he was still in middle school (age 13–14). Growing up, Durant had always wanted to play for his favorite team-the Toronto Raptors which included one of his heroes: Vince Carter!

At National Christian Academy, Durant played two years of high school basketball and grew five inches before transferring to Montrose Christian School for his senior year. There he was six feet seven inches tall at the start of the season and would soon grow another four-and-a half inches.

The basketball star had explored multiple options for colleges, but ultimately chose to become a Longhorn. When asked why he went against the popular opinion and picked the University of Texas at Austin over other renowned programs such as Duke or North Carolina, he said that “Wanted to set my own path.”

Michael Jordan once said that if you love what you do, then it is not work. For Kevin Durant in 2006, he had found his true calling when playing basketball after being named the Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player for McDonald’s High School Game at only 17 years old. He was considered second best high school prospect since NBA star Greg Oden has just entered college a year before him during this time period so there were no doubt about how good he really was with all these accolades under his belt already!

Career

In 2007, Durant was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics as a second overall draft pick. The first pick in this year’s NBA Draft went to Portland Trail Blazers and their selection of Greg Oden. A 19-year old Kevin Durant had 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals against the Nuggets in his first regular season game. On November 16th of that year he made a game winning shot for Atlanta Hawks.

He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of his 2007-08 season after averaging 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game throughout that year’s games with an average field goal percentage near 45%.

Basketball fans everywhere were shocked to learn that the Seattle SuperSonics would be moving away from their beloved team. However, an Oklahoma City group of investors bought up the old Sonics and moved them out of Washington. The new Thunder sported a fresh color scheme with blue taking over for green as well orange replacing purple while yellow was brought in instead on red being taken off altogether! By the conclusion of the 2008–09 NBA season, he had raised his scoring average by 5 points from prior year to 25.3 ppg and was considered a strong candidate for Most Improved Player Award with 3rd place in voting.

At the 2012 Olympics, Kevin Durant set a record for total points scored in an Olympic basketball tournament. With averages of 19.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game he helped lead Team USA to their third consecutive gold medal with an undefeated run!

On July 7, 2018, Kevin Durant re-signed with the Warriors for two years. His contract was worth $61.5 million and included a player option after one year so that he could choose when to leave in 2020 if desired.

I don’t care about the MVP, that stuff is for writers and fans.

Every day I wake up with a new mind. Every day I wake up feeling grateful to be able to do what I love for living

I just want to be remembered as somebody who had fun playing the game, somebody that could bring joy to people's lives because I know when I'm on the floor, it makes me happy. It was my escape from reality. If you don't have your happiness in this world what are you fighting for?

Lessons of Success

– Kevin is a perfectionist. He doesn’t settle for mediocre, but he also does not let his standards get in the way of enjoying himself and what he’s doing; Kevin allows room to be imperfect while still striving to improve.

– Kevin follows basketball philosophy that means having fun out there on the court. Kevin doesn’t go out there and just play without a passion. Kevin has fun, but he also works hard to be the best player that he can be.

– Kevin’s ability to take criticism is one of his greatest assets as a baller. Kevin hates being wrong or criticized, but he uses it as fuel for improvement rather than letting it get him down. Kevin takes constructive criticism and makes it a part of him rather than letting it divide or break him down.

Summary

It’s impossible to mention Kevin Durant without mentioning his on-court dominance, but it is equally difficult not to admire him for what he does off the court. The Golden State Warriors forward has used his platform as an athlete and NBA superstar to empower others in need of a voice. Kevin Durant’s net worth is reportedly around $150 million as of 2022.

He signed with Nike in 2016, partnered with UNIQLO last year, donated $10 million dollars towards youth education programs earlier this year, and regularly works alongside organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation which gives children battling life threatening illnesses their wish come true. With more than just basketball skills at hand (and one hell of an arm), it seems unlikely that anyone will be able to stop KD from achieving all of his goals.
