Cube was born O’Shea Jackson on June 15, 1969 in Baldwin Hills, South Central Los Angeles, the son of Doris, a hospital clerk and custodian, and Hosea Jackson, who worked as a groundskeeper at UCLA and a machinist. He has an older brother as well as a half-sister who was killed when Ice Cube was 12.
In ninth grade at George Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles, a friend of Cube’s challenged him to start writing raps. He accepted the challenge and won by using his brother as inspiration for “Cube.” Explaining how he came up with this name, Cube said that it was inspired from an incident where his older brother threatened to slam him into a freezer if he didn’t stop making music.
Cube attended Woodland Hills High School in California, but soon after he wrote and recorded a few locally successful rap songs with N.W.A, he left for Arizona to enroll at the Phoenix Institute of Technology in fall 1987 semester where he graduated from architecture school six years later. In 1988 Cube returned to Los Angeles area and rejoined NWA who was currently enjoying local success while still working on his backup plan as an architect by drafting designs during weekends.
At 16, Cube sold his first song to Eric Wright who was forming Ruthless Records and the musical team N.W.A based in Compton, California which led him on a journey through music history that continues today.
In May of 1990, Ice Cube released his first solo album. AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted was a hit and further increased rap’s popularity as it grew in mainstream America. However, the lyrics were considered controversial because they received accusations of misogyny and racism from many different people despite being praised for its production by The Bomb Squad who produced Public Enemy songs during that time period.
His second album, Death Certificate was released in 1991 and thought to be more focused than his first. Yet it is still controversial as accusations of anti-white, antisemitic, and misogynist content continue to follow him around.
The rapper Ice Cube responded to the criticisms of his second album with an explanation, “I know some of you are going to be offended. If I get on my knees and pray every night that people won’t take shit wrong or will understand where I’m coming from then it might help.”
Ice Cube went on to release 28 albums and 10 studio albums under his own name. His hits were played on some of the biggest stages in the world, including Madison Square Garden (New York City).
In 2020, Cube joined rappers Snoop Dogg and Too Short to form the supergroup Mt. Westmore along with rapper E-40 which was a dream come true for all three musicians as they had been friends since their youth in Long Beach California.
Ice Cube has acted in nearly 40 films since 1991, most of which are comedies. Three Kings and Trespass were both notable action-packed thrillers for him. Yet he also starred as the leading role in family friendly movies like Friday and Barbershop franchise that families can enjoy together!
In 2007, Ice Cube produced his first television series which was a hidden-camera prank show called “Black. White.” In May of 2017, the rapper’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr., also an actor, joined the cast of NBC drama “This Is Us.”
