At the age of three, he became interested in hip-hop thanks to his mother. Kid Gangsta began rapping recreationally at the age of five and joined an amateur rap group three years later.

In 1993, he performed at a concert in Los Angeles, and was discovered by rapper Snoop Dogg, who subsequently dubbed him “Lil’ Bow Wow.” He made his debut on The Arsenio Hall Show in late 1993.

In 1998, at the age of eleven, Bow Wow met record producer Jermaine Dupri, who helped shape his career. In 1999, the soundtrack to the movie Wild Wild West featured his song “The Stick Up” with his mentor Jermaine Dupri.

Lil’ Bow Wow was born Brandon Carter on July 13, 1990. In 2000, at the age of 13, he premiered as Lil’ Bow Wow with Beware of Dog. “Bounce with Me,” a collaboration with R&B girl group Xscape, was the song’s debut single. On March 5, 2001, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album gold, signifying U.S. sales of at least 500,000 copies; three months later on June 11, 2001, the RIAA gave it platinum certification for 1 million units shipped. Doggy Bag peaked at #11 on Billboard’s Top 200 in the United States and at #17 on the Canadian Albums Chart. The album’s third single, “Puppy Love,” became a radio hit and the song most associated with the album.

Bow Wow dropped the “Lil'” from his stage name in April 2002; he told MTV News: “I changed my name because I’m getting older now and it’s too many Lil’s. All these Lil’ rappers, I’m just kind of getting real irritated by it.

Career

In 2003, Bow Wow released his self-titled third studio album, on which he collaborated with Birdman, Mario, and Amerie. The release was met with disparate judgments; while it reached number three on the Billboard Top 200 and sold 129,000 copies in its first week, it received mixed reviews.

Following his mentor Ali’s death, Bow Wow released “Unleashed” in late 2004. This album included several collaborators, including Omarion, on “Wanted.” The Billboard 200 number-three debut of “Wanted” was similar to that of “Unleasted,” entering at number three and selling 120,000 units in the first week.

Bow Wow had a pivotal role in the film Like Mike (2002) alongside Lil’ Romeo. Bow Wow also co-starred with his rap partner Chris Brown in the 2006 movie “You Got Served.”

This was the first of Bow Wow’s albums to feature a parental warning, as it addressed issues like drug use. He also joined Cash Money Records in 2009. By 2004, Bow Wow’s popularity had begun to wane due to a number of factors, including the increased competitiveness in the hip-hop industry and his own personal problems. His last album for Cash Money was released in 2006; however, he left immediately afterwards. After that point on, things began to unravel for Bow Wow: his musical career at a standstill and his relationship with Joie Chavis came to an end.

After one more album release, he announced that he would retire from rapping after that. Fans were sad to hear in 2019 that the project was still not available. In 2016, Shad Moss worked with Soulja Boy on a mixtape.
