Early Life
Abel Tesfaye was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, to Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. He is an only child and was raised by his grandmother and mother after his parents separated.
He spent his childhood in Scarborough, a multicultural neighborhood filled with fellow East Africans, as well as people from India, the Middle East and the Caribbean. “Ethiopian — Amharic — was the first language I learned to form sentences in because my grandma, who raised me with my mom, would not speak English,” he told Variety. “Because of television and being in Canada, I learned English too, but I went to French-immersion school, where you’d get in trouble for speaking English, and I couldn’t speak it to my grandma, so it’s almost like English is my third language, even though now it’s my first.”
When asked whether he remembered his father, he responded, “I saw him vaguely when I was six and again when I was eleven or twelve, and he had a new family and children. I’m not even sure where he lived; I’d see him for maybe a night.
“It really feels like the movie ‘Kids without the AIDS,’ where I was just walking around, being a kid,” he has stated of his youth years. He said he started smoking marijuana at the age of eleven and then used ecstasy, oxycodone, Xanax, cocaine, psilocybin, and ketamine.
Career
The Weeknd’s career began when he met producer Jeremy Rose while working on an R&B project called “The Weekend.” When the two collaborated to produce an R&B album, it was decided that Abel’s music would not be included.
The rejection inspired The Weeknd to establish his own YouTube channel, where he released three tracks. Tesfaye uploaded “What You Need”, “Loft Music” and “The Morning” under the username “xoxxxoooxo”. His identity was initially unknown. The songs generated some attention on the internet, and were subsequently included in a blog post by Drake. The songs subsequently received coverage from various media outlets, including Pitchfork and The New York Times.
Following the song he released in 2010, he went on to produce his first mixtape, which was titled “House of Balloons,” and released it in 2011.
In 2011, he released his second and third mixtapes, Thursday and Echoes of Silence. In the first year, these first three mixtapes sent him soaring to the top.
From 2012 to early 2014, he was performing at music festivals around the United States and Europe, including Coachella, Primavera Sound Festivals, and Wireless Festival. In the same year, he inked a recording contract with Republic Records and revealed his debut album titled ‘Trilogy.’
He released an album called ‘Kiss Land’ in 2013, as well as a track for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’ He also appeared on the soundtrack for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ He later released his song ‘Earned It,’ which featured on the soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey, and he collaborated with Ariana Grande.
In the years that followed, he released two more albums, ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ and ‘Starboy,’ which had artists such as Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Rey, Labyrinth, Kendrick Lamar, and others.
On February 7, 2021, The Weeknd became the first Canadian solo artist to headline the Super Bowl in its 61st year. He reportedly spent $7 million of his own money on the show. Tesfaye appeared on Kanye West’s tenth studio album Donda, singing lead vocals on “Hurricane.”

The Weeknd Religion
Often, Grammy-winning R&B singer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye injects his song lyrics, music video imagery, and sound with explicit references to drugs and sex and an overarching sense of darkness. Nevertheless, the Weeknd’s music also seems to carry a philosophical weight and, perhaps, a sense of a higher power.
The Weeknd’s parents immigrated to Canada from Ethiopia in the 1980s. After his parents divorced, he was raised by his grandmother. The Weeknd attended Ethiopian Orthodox church services regularly as a child and was raised in a very religious environment.
Despite not maintaining his Ethiopian Orthodox religious practices, The Weeknd paid tribute to his religious upbringing in 2016.
Ethiosports reports that the Ethiopian-Canadian singer donated $50,000 to the St. Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Toronto. Father Misale Engida, the church’s head priest, recalled attending services at the cathedral with his grandmother as a child.
A number of fans have noticed spiritual themes in The Weeknd’s songs, such as a sense of existential wandering or a search for a higher power amid loss, addiction, chaos, and confusion. There is a constant interplay between light and darkness in The Weeknd’s lyrics.
Was The Weeknd Homeless?
The Weeknd lived in an $850-a-month apartment with two high school friends he paid for with welfare checks. The trio would shoplift food from a nearby supermarket to survive. In addition to selling marijuana for a nominal amount of money, he and his roommates lived a “no rules” lifestyle and used drugs such as MDMA, Xanax, cocaine, mushrooms and ketamine. The Weeknd also addressed this dark time in his autobiographical song “Snowchild.” They were eventually evicted, and The Weeknd confessed that he would tell girls he loved them so that he could find a place to live.
When he was about 18, The Weeknd also spent and night in jail, which he described as bad enough for him to “smarten up, to focus.” He said, “A lot of people don’t get a second chance.” Usually you get one second chance after a slap on the wrist at that age. Either you take the experience and think, “This is it, the final straw,” or you don’t. What happens next? It’s your whole life. It’s what you do next that determines who you are.”

Quotes
You fall in love with the little things about someone, like the sound of their laughter and the way their smile forms.
When I was making the early stuff, I never expected it to be so big. I was in my own kind of bubble. I never wanted to tour; I just wanted to create music and make a diary I could put out into the world. And sometimes, I became the characters.
The mind of a 19-year-old is very different from the mind of a 26-year-old. You grow. You get into better relationships. You experience more, meet more people, better people. But when you’re in a dark hole at an earlier point in your life – you write about the mindset you’re in at that moment.
Lessons of Success
Look for inspiration – When you’re traveling constantly, every day you become inspired, and it shows in my work, sonically, lyrically, visually.
Find your purpose – My purpose is to make exciting music, and I feel like I’ll be doing that for the rest of my life, so there’s no pressure.
