William Leonard Roberts II (born January 28, 1976), better known by his stage name Rick Ross, is an American rapper and entrepreneur. He derived his stage name from the drug trafficker “Freeway” Ricky Ross; he has sold 25 million albums worldwide.

Early Life
William Leonard Roberts II was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and raised in Carol City, Florida. He has two brothers, who he says were involved with the local drug trade.
After his older brother died of a cocaine overdose that had been laced with gunpowder, Ross decided to pursue rapping after seeing Tupac Shakur’s performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
In the mid-2000s, he became known as Rick Ross. He got his stage name from Freeway Rick Ross, who has nothing to do with him.

Roberts worked as a correctional officer for 18 months between December 1995 and June 1997. As his career as a rapper began, this fact was kept well hidden.
