Cage was born in Long Beach, California, to August Coppola, a professor of literature, and Joy Vogelsang. He is the son of a Catholic family.
His mother was of German and Polish ancestry, while his father was of Italian descent. His paternal grandparents were composer Carmine Coppola and actress Italia Pennino, both of whom were movie stars in the 1920s before entering the field of cinema.
