Early Life
Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York. His father, Hutton Gibson, was of Irish ancestry, and had been a Lithuanian immigrant who moved to the United States after serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. His mother, Ann “Nancy” (née Fay), whose parents were both from the United Kingdom, had come to New York from her home in Newcastle upon Tyne. His father is a widower; Gibson has one half-sister and three half-brothers.
In 1968, Gibson’s father won a work-related injury lawsuit against the New York Central Railroad and soon after decided to relocate his family from America to Australia. Mel was twelve years old at this time in their lives.
During his high school years, Gibson was educated by members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers at St Leo’s Catholic College in Wahroonga, New South Wales. These brothers were very influential on him and he credits them for much success later in life after winning an Oscar award.
