Leno was born on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York. His housewife mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), was born in Greenock, Scotland, and immigrated to the United States at age 11. Angelo’s father, Raffaele (1897–1979) grew up in Giulianova, Italy and was a cutlery salesman (born to Giovanni Leno and Palmira Raffole). His father later owned and operated a seafood restaurant in which Jay Leno worked as a cook after his parents sent him off at age 15 for a course at the Culinary Institute of America.
Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from Andover High School.[4] Leno obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. His older brother, Patrick (May 12, 1940 – October 6, 2002), was a Vietnam War veteran who worked as an attorney.

On March 2, 1977, Jay Leno made his debut on The Tonight Show. In the 1970s, Leno had minor parts in several television series and films, including a role as JJ in “J.J. in Trouble” of Good Times in 1976 and as Holmes & Yo-Yo’s pilot that same year. He has since acted in some films including Johnny Dangerously (1984) and See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989). His many guest appearances include the role of a cantankerous airplane passenger who insists that he is “Richard Belzer” in The Stupids. He hosted NBC’s morning show My Name Is Earl during its first season.
Leno started out as a fill-in for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show in 1986. In 1992, amid considerable speculation, he took over the program from Carson, who had been hosting Late Night with David Letterman since 1982 (aired after The Tonight Show), and many—including Carson himself – predicted would be his replacement.
