Early Life

Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Santo António, a neighbourhood of Funchal, Madeira, the youngest child of José Dinis Aveiro , a municipal gardener and his wife Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro , a cook. His second given name “Ronaldo” was chosen after then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan, who was his father’s favourite actor. He has one older brother, Hugo (b. 1975), and two older sisters, Elma (b. 1973) and Liliana Cátia “Katia” ( b. 1977), who is a singer.

When Ronaldo was seven years old, he began playing for Andorinha’s youth squad. For two years, his father worked as the kit man at the club and later asked to take a shot with them too. When Ronaldo turned 12 in 1997, Sporting CP invited him along on trial where they ended up signing him immediately after seeing what he could do! Ronaldo was a popular student, but after he threw a chair at his teacher for disrespecting him, the school decided to expel Ronaldo. However, one year later Ronaldo was diagnosed with a racing heart. This condition could have forced him to give up playing football; however, he had surgery where they used lasers on different pathways in his heart and this altered his resting heart rate. He only stayed at the hospital for hours after the procedure before returning to training days later as if nothing happened!

At the age of 12, Ronaldo began his football career playing for Andorinha from Madeira. In 2001, he went on a three-day trial with Sporting CP who subsequently signed him for £1,500. He further trained with Sporting’s youth players and played for its junior team as well as competing in the tournaments organised by the Portuguese Football Federation. Ronaldo successfully completed his move to Sporting Lisbon at age 18 in 2002.

Ronaldo played his first pre-season game for Manchester United against Club Brugge, where he scored a hat-trick , which would get him into the starting line up for their opening Premier League fixture against Bolton Wanderers. In his Premiership debut, Ronaldo scored a brace and was given man of the match award as United went on to beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 at Old Trafford. His first Premier League hat trick followed later in month during a 7-1 trashing United inflicted on Wolves at Molineux Stadium.

On 1 August 2009 it was confirmed that Ronaldo had completed his move to Real Madrid for £80 million (€93.9 million/$131.6 million), making him the most expensive footballer in history at that time. Ronaldo signing for Real Madrid shattered many records such as the world transfer record, highest paid player in football history and also highest fee per pound sterling (€94 million / £80.2 million).

The biggest football news of the summer 2018 was Ronaldo’s shocking transfer from Real Madrid to Italian club Juventus. Despite months of negotiation, on July 10th he signed a four-year contract with his new team for €100 million total and an additional €12 million in “other fees,” which were specifically allocated by FIFA to go back into development programs throughout his youth soccer clubs.

On August 27, 2021 Manchester United announced that they had reached an agreement with Juventus to sign Ronaldo. The transfer was reported as costing $12 million and would be on a two-year contract plus another optional year. Ronaldo will wear the number 7 shirt after Edinson Cavani agreed to switch his own number 21 jersey for it instead.

When you play for Real Madrid, the number of games is very high. You don't have time to go out and party or do some things that people might think are fun. It does not relax me at all. If I can't sleep, then I sleep; if I'm tired, I sleep; if I'm not, it doesn't matter, I play.

I don't have a lucky charm. I believe in myself. If you want to be successful, if you want to fight for something special you have to believe in yourself.

All my coaches are still with me because they are good friends of mine too - the three who are not here right now are Jorge Valdano, Carlos Queiroz and Louis van Gaal. I have had so many others with me but these are the ones that are not here.

Lessons of Success

Don’t Give Up – What you should know about the world is that it isn’t fair and nobody is going to treat you well all of the time, You will be judged based on your appearance or what others think of you, Focus on yourself and work hard because nothing else matters if you don’t achieve your goals. You can be confident and work towards your dreams because you deserve to live the life you want.

Know Your Limits, But Don’t Set Them – It’s important to know your limits but it’s also important not to set them too short, Understand what you’re capable of doing and don’t give up on achieving your goals even if it means falling down a few times. You have to pick yourself up and keep moving forward so don’t ever stop working on becoming the person you want to be.

Don’t Give Advice, Only Teach – You can teach people how to achieve success but you shouldn’t give them advice because they won’t always take it, You can share your experiences but people are responsible for their own lives so don’t try to control them, Instead of giving advice focus on listening because you can always learn something new when you listen.

Ronaldo has worked hard to get to the top and he knows what it takes to stay at the top. His life hasn’t been without pitfalls but his passion for success has helped him battle through tough times and come out a winner. Those who are looking for a role model to follow should look no further than Cristiano Ronaldo.
