Early Life

Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born September 23, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey and grew up in Freehold Borough. Bruce’s father Douglas Fredrick Springsteen worked as a bus driver for the school system and his mother Adele Ann (née Zerilli) was a legal secretary who later became an actress. Bruce has three sisters, Virginia, Pamela, and Charlotte. Bruce’s great-great-grandfather William Springsteen emigrated from Germany to the U.S., arriving in New York City on July 31, 1885 at the age of 34 with his wife Sarah Bossler (born January 12, 1841). Bruce’s maternal grandfather Carlo Zerilli was born in Garigliano, Italy, while Bruce’s paternal grandparents were German immigrants.

Springsteen formed several bands with high school friends and the first gig they ever played together was for his junior high school’s Christmas dance. Bruce performed at church dances and at bars, sometimes with musicians like Vini Lopez, who taught him how to play drums. Bruce graduated from Freehold High School in 1965.

In 1967 Bruce Springsteen enrolled as a freshman at Ocean County College in Toms River, New Jersey before moving to California. Bruce’s college friends remember him as a shy and straightforward fellow who showed no desire to dress up or act like he was somebody important.

Bruce eventually returned to New Jersey where he began performing regularly at small venues in Asbury Park. Bruce’s experiences in coffee houses and bars gave him a thorough grounding in how to connect with an audience.

Career

Bruce Springsteen’s first come-on to the big time was his chance encounter with Clive Davis, then an executive at Columbia Records. Bruce bumped into him in a coffee shop while Bruce was still working as a guitarist in local bands. Bruce was indeed talented, but Bruce’s laid-back style did not impress Davis at first. Bruce was playing another day at the Gaslight Cafe coffee house when Davis heard him again and signed Bruce to Columbia Records that night.

Bruce recorded his debut album “Greetings from Asbury Park N.J.” with the help of Mike Appel. The album was commercially well received, but Bruce returned to the coffee house circuit.

Bruce next produced a much bigger hit with “Born to Run”, which Bruce recorded with the help of Jon Landau and developed it over a period of several years. The album catapulted Bruce into commercial superstardom

Springsteen’s success continued into the 2000s. Following a hiatus from the E Street Band throughout the 1990s, he reassembled them for his 2002 album “the Rising,” which won the Grammy for Best Rock Album of the Year. In similar fashion to his prior two acoustic records, “Devils & Dust” was released in April 2005. Since then Bruce has released “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions” in April 2006, Bruce’s most folk album to date.

Bruce has continued his popularity with several top ten hits, including “Lonesome Day”, “Radio Nowhere”, and the anthem for working-class Americans, “The Rising”. Bruce Springsteen continues to record and tour, and Bruce is widely considered to be working class hero.

As of January 2020, Springsteen has won twenty Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award.
