Clarence William “Bill” Nelson II (born September 29, 1942) is an American politician and Democratic Party member who has served as the senior United States Senator from Florida since 2001. Nelson began his political career serving in the Florida House of Representatives from 1973 until 1979. From 1979 until 1991, he was a member of the United States House of Representatives. Nelson became the second sitting member of the United States Congress to fly in space in January 1986. On the Space Shuttle Columbia, he served as a Payload Specialist.
In 1990, he left Congress to run for Governor of Florida, but he was defeated. From 1995 to 2001, he served as Florida’s Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, and Fire Marshal.
Nelson was elected to the United States Senate seat left by retiring Republican Senator Connie Mack III in 2000. He was re-elected with 60 percent of the vote in 2006 and 55 percent of the vote in 2012. He is often regarded as a centrist Democrat in the Senate.
